Oscoda board narrowly approves Lake Huron Forever pledge after attorney cautions on potential fiscal steps

Supporters said the pledge largely formalizes work the township already funds — for example, park maintenance at Beach Park — and that grants and regional partnerships could offset costs. Opponents said the township's 2025 budget shows a significant projected deficit and that committing to additional initiatives without clear, itemized funding could be imprudent.
The final roll-call vote was Yeas — Mr. Wusterbarth, Mr. Sutton, Mr. Tasior and Mr. Palmer; Nays — Ms. McGuire and Mr. Spencer. Those in favor cited the importance of regional cooperation and the existence of grant funding opportunities; those opposed asked that the incoming board consider the pledge after reviewing concrete cost estimates.
What happens next: The township will file the pledge per its adoption process. The board discussion and the attorney's memo will be part of the record for any future requests to fund pledge-related activities.
