East Haddam committee compiles list of peer libraries for site visits, prioritizing new construction and adaptable buildings

The East Haddam Library Building Committee on June 28 agreed on a working list of peer libraries to visit as it develops plans for a new or adapted facility. Members said site visits should focus on new construction and adaptable existing buildings that demonstrate land use, parking and community integration.
The committee named several candidates drawn from a past committee’s report and member suggestions: Brainerd Memorial Library (Haddam), Cragin Library (Colchester), Durham Public Library (Durham), East Hampton Public Library, Essex Library, Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library, Portland Library, Salem Free Public Library, Glastonbury, Russell Library (Middletown), Scranton Library (Madison), Lebanon, Putnam, Southington, Canton, New Canaan, Washington, South Southington and Mark Twain (as noted by members). A committee member said the goal is to "visit the ones that approximate what we're going to do" and to learn how other towns used land and designed interior spaces.
Members asked the chair and others to prepare a short, portable checklist or set of guiding questions for site visits so participants can capture comparable information (land area, parking, meeting‑room layouts, maker spaces, exterior programming). The committee agreed not all members will attend every visit and that the checklist will help aggregate findings across trips.
