The Grand Island Historic Preservation Advisory Board on an ordinary monthly meeting moved to coordinate several outreach and interpretive projects, including a White Oaks program on April 25, new signage for the former Nike base, and online material accessible via QR code.
Chair opened the meeting, collected volunteer-hours totals and asked members to review printed minutes; the minutes were moved and seconded and approved by voice vote. A board member reported that at a recent Monday meeting the town had approved a stipend increase to $5,000.
Board members agreed to prepare a 20-minute presentation and a one-page handout for a White Oaks outreach program at the welcome center on April 25, scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Chair said Mary will present history material and the group will distribute free tree seedlings; the board asked that any promotional copy be kept short to attract attendees.
The group also reviewed plans for an interpretive sign at the former Nike base. Members want visuals prioritized: "I think it's essential for us to be pushing for those 3 pictures across the top in the print," a member said. They discussed locating historic photographs and an insignia for the 336th battalion, and accepted that permissions or Army approval might be required to reproduce emblems on the sign.
To expand interpretive content beyond the sign, members resolved to host a concise web page or PDF on the town website and link to it with a QR code. The board's interim tech contact will confirm how to publish material and generate the QR code so the sign can point readers to additional photos, context and a short who/what/where/when/why description.
The meeting included a broader discussion of archival work: members reported recent acquisitions (film clips and a PowerPoint from the North Tonawanda research center) and agreed to consolidate scattered materials into a historian's office or the historical society's files for preservation and future exhibits.
Votes at a glance: - Motion to approve minutes: moved and seconded during this meeting; approved by voice vote. (Mover referenced in minutes as "Carrie makes the motion"; formal roll-call not recorded.) - Stipend increase to $5,000: reported as approved at a prior Monday meeting; board member announced the action as completed (vote not taken during this session).
Next steps include circulating a petition draft to gather neighborhood signatures on Ferry Village issues, consolidating archival files for the historian's office, preparing the White Oaks handout and mock-up sign images for the Nike base, and coordinating with the town IT contact to set up the QR-linked page.
