Pat McLaughlin, assistant superintendent for strategic planning and policy, summarized the policy’s three guiding principles — accuracy, consistency and support for student learning — and noted the policy was initially adopted in 2020. Megan Wood, director of professional learning, described multi‑year implementation steps, including teacher roundtables, a handbook, grading champions at each high school and training for new secondary teachers.
Board members praised the policy’s goals but asked for more consistent practice and clearer guidance on issues such as retake policies and how “work habits” are addressed in practice. Several members said they wanted more teacher and student input; the board signaled consensus to add a governance committee (a standing or recurring group of teachers, principals, students and staff) to the consent agenda for the next meeting and to return with recommended language.
Members stressed that the policy itself is largely sound but that implementation requires ongoing attention; administrators agreed to reconvene focus groups and report back on consistency and potential technical changes for classroom practice.
