Board approves relaxed rules for employees enrolling their children in district schools
Summary
The board voted to allow employees greater flexibility to request enrollment for their children in the school where they work or feeder schools, to permit placement choices for staff not assigned to a single building, and to retain student enrollment through the semester if employment ends.
The Board of School Trustees approved revisions to district conditions that govern enrollment of children of district employees.
Superintendent Parker recommended the changes, saying the 2015 conditions had become difficult for some employees and may have contributed to recruitment and retention challenges. Under the approved policy, employees may request their children attend the school where they work or an appropriate feeder school; employees not assigned to a specific building (for example, bus drivers) may request placement at a school of their choice. The district will not provide transportation to out‑of‑district students or to students attending a school other than the one in which they are assigned.
Parker noted the board previously limited employees to a single elementary school placement and that the proposed changes are intended to be more accommodating. The policy includes a provision that, if employment is terminated, the student may remain enrolled through the end of the semester. The board moved and approved the recommended conditions on a voice vote.
President Hathaway called for the motion and the board approved the changes by voice vote; no individual roll-call tally was recorded in the public transcript.
