Kyrene board approves roofing contracts and adopts several policies in unanimous votes

On April 7 the Kyrene Elementary District Governing Board approved several routine but consequential items: utilization of cooperative contracts for a roofing and skylight project, including asbestos and air-quality compliance protocols, and the formal adoption of multiple district policies.

Associate Superintendent Chris Herman introduced a roofing and skylight compliance protocol and invited Director of Facilities Mason Mead to summarize planned safety practices. Mead said the district will meet with the Maricopa County Air Quality Department before work begins, provide licensed asbestos surveys, and conduct pre- and post-project air-quality testing through a licensed third-party consultant to ensure safe re-occupancy. "These steps ensure not only compliance, but also a proactive approach to protecting students, staff, and the district," Mead said.

The board approved utilization of cooperative contracts awarded to Narcon Industries and Progressive Roofing and authorized the superintendent to proceed; the motion passed 5–0.

In policy business the board approved and adopted policy 3‑03‑303 (business and personnel transportation services) and policy 40‑4108 (changing title telework → remote work) after first-read discussion; both were adopted 5–0. The board also adopted updates to the students-with-disabilities policy (policy 5‑203) to reflect recent state statute changes requiring dyslexia reporting and clarifying evaluation timing; that item was adopted 5–0 after staff said the change aligns the policy to state requirements.

The board also approved its 2026 governing-board goals — covering enrollment and facilities review, consolidation communications and a communication handbook revision timetable — and set follow-up timelines.
