Groton council unanimously forwards and accepts Early Childhood Smart Start grants totaling $1.125 million

On July 7 the Groton Town Council approved two state Early Childhood Smart Start grants intended to support early childhood capital and operations needs.
Councilor Pacino moved to accept a $150,000 Early Childhood Smart Start capital grant and forward the item to the Representative Town Meeting for approval; the motion was seconded and passed 9-0-0. Later the council approved a separate Smart Start operations grant for $975,000, authorizing Mayor Juliet Parker to sign any necessary paperwork; that motion also passed 9-0-0.
Town staff told the council the capital program is intended to support home rehabilitation and related work for manufactured/mobile homes and that the operations grant will support program delivery; staff said the town hopes to have the rehabilitation program up and running by the end of the month and that planning department staff are preparing implementation steps.
Both grants were forwarded/authorized consistent with state requirements and will be administered by the town with Mayor Parker or the town manager signing documents as needed.
