The Cedar County Board of Supervisors on June 30 adopted a temporary resolution keeping the posted speed limit at 55 miles per hour on paved secondary roads while the County conducts engineering and traffic investigations under revised state speed-limit law.
County Engineer Fangmann told the Board the posted 55 mph limits should be maintained as an interim measure so individual roadway segments can be evaluated under the new statutory framework. The resolution cites Sections 321.255 and 321.285 of the Code of Iowa and Senate File 378, which takes effect July 1, 2026, and directs the County Engineer to continue evaluations and provide recommendations to the Board.
Moved by Supervisor Kaufmann and seconded by Supervisor Barnhart, the motion authorizing Chairperson Bell to sign the “Temporary 55 MPH Speed Limit on County Paved Secondary Roads” resolution passed with four ayes; Supervisor Gaul was absent for the vote. The resolution establishes the 55 mph interim limit on paved secondary roads currently posted at that speed and directs staff to update signage as appropriate.
The Board and Engineer Fangmann said the interim measure is intended to preserve current posted limits while the county completes its reviews; Fangmann will return with recommendations for any future changes to individual segments. The Board recorded the resolution as passed and will revisit speed limits after the engineer’s investigations.
