Police Chief David Pernice reviewed the department's activity for July and the period from June 1 through Aug. 13, reporting a total of 269 calls—an average of about 3.63 calls per day. Calls ranged from vehicle pursuits and warrants to domestic incidents, drug activity and issues involving homelessness; Chief Pernice said some incidents can occupy an entire shift, citing a domestic call that extended from 8:50 p.m. to about 2:00 a.m.
Pernice told council he and Officer Shelly attended an Alert Active Shooter training July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek Police Department and found it beneficial. He said he applied to the UC Community Foundation for funding and that the foundation awarded both an application for four tasers and a second application for security cameras to cover an additional section of North Main Street.
Council approved hiring a part-time officer earlier in the meeting; Chief Pernice said the department appreciates the additional coverage. Borough Manager Cindy Wells reported the budget had allowed at least $33,560 for wages and benefits, and that hiring the candidate as part-time would cost less than the full-time figure in the budget.
No public-comment speakers addressed policing during the meeting.
