Thorntown Fire Department to acquire new air packs after grant and $93,000 quote

Thorntown Fire Chief Steve Whittinghill told the council on Sept. 23 the department recorded 338 total runs through the end of August and needs to replace aging air packs that are 20–25 years old and no longer have available replacement parts.
Whittinghill said a grant applied for by Cody Seymour of the Sugar Creek/Thorntown Fire Department supplied 15 sets of new fire gear and 15 air packs, but the department still needs an additional 10 packs and 25 replacement bottles. Municipal Emergency Services (MES) provided a quote of $93,000 for the remaining equipment. Whittinghill said the cost would be split evenly between the Town and the Township.
Council President Sara Fairfield moved to authorize the $93,000 expenditure with the 50/50 split; Shawn McClintock seconded and the motion passed 5-0. The council asked Chief Whittinghill to break down the number of Town versus Township runs for future reporting.
The authorization follows the grant-supported delivery of some gear and is intended to ensure firefighters have serviceable self-contained breathing apparatus as older packs become unsupportable for repair.
