Engineers to review downtown alley stormwater repair bids; CenterPoint allowed to start separate utility work

The Town of Thorntown Council opened four bids Sept. 9 for a stormwater repair project in the downtown alley behind Pizza King and asked the town’s engineering firm to verify compliance with specifications before recommending a contractor.
According to the minutes, the bids read aloud were: Calumet Civil Contractors — $72,000.00; JS McCullough Excavating — $38,619.00; Newby Excavating — $25,468.00; and Rieth-Riley Construction (amount in the meeting minutes appears garbled). Engineers from BFS Engineering (Colin Sullivan and Chris Wheatly) will review the submissions for specification compliance and return to the council on Sept. 23 with a recommendation.
During the discussion Chris Wheatly said CenterPoint Energy needs to perform related work in the same alley. Council voted 4-0 to allow CenterPoint to proceed with its work before the town’s stormwater project begins. The motion to permit CenterPoint to move forward was made by Larry Truitt and seconded by Shawn McClintock; the minutes record the motion as passing 4-0 but do not list individual roll-call votes.
The council did not select a contractor at the Sept. 9 meeting. The engineers’ forthcoming recommendation on Sept. 23 is expected to include confirmation that each bid meets the project specifications and any recommendations about sequencing with CenterPoint’s work.
The meeting minutes list the bids as read into the record; one bid amount (Rieth-Riley) appears to contain a typographical error in the minutes ($70,6173.16). The minutes and the original bid documents will need to be checked to confirm the correct figure before the council acts on the recommendation.
