Carmel Elementary students present community-garden and donation projects to court
Summary
Students from Carmel Elementary presented two STL projects focused on gardens, recycling and a food/clothing drive; the court and community members discussed how the senior center and local drop-off points could support the effort.
A presenter (S5) introduced STL students from Carmel Elementary who described two school projects: a Sellers Community Garden planting plan and a donation drive for cereal, breakfast items and gently used clothing. Students (S6–S9) answered questions about raised beds, what they had harvested, and how community members can donate food.
S5 said the school has passed regionals and will present at state on April 24; she explained that seedlings will be started before spring break and then transplanted outdoors. S5 also said surplus produce will be available at a farm stand on the Highland Avenue side of the school and that neighbors can pick up extra vegetables or drop off extra crops and donations.
Committee members asked whether the senior center could help maintain raised beds and coordinate care; S1 and S2 discussed coordinating beds so the senior center and students can work together. The exchange was framed as an educational opportunity for students to learn gardening and civic processes and as a way to increase local food access.
