The Archie Board of Aldermen voted Feb. 10 to accept the voluntary annexation of Butcher Road, extending city limits from the north city limit line to Pine Street.
During the public hearing, a resident identified as Wymore said he was concerned about who would bear maintenance costs and whether semi‑trucks would be allowed to use the roadway. Aldermen Scott Kendrick and Mark Houchen said they would speak with Sutton’s about truck access. Randall Grimes expressed concern about a culvert at the corner of A Highway and Butcher Road; Alderman Houchen said he would inspect the culvert.
After the hearing closed, Alderman Kendrick moved to accept the annexation and Alderman Houchen seconded. The motion passed with Houchen—yes, Kendrick—yes, Molzahn—yes; Alderman Tony Sallee was recorded absent.
Why it matters: annexation shifts responsibility for planning and some maintenance decisions to the city and can affect service delivery and signage, truck routing and future road work. The board’s next steps include consultation with Sutton’s about truck routing and a field inspection of the culvert raised by residents.
The board took the vote the same night it handled several other agenda items and did not amend the annexation motion with conditions tied to maintenance funding; follow‑up and any staff recommendations would occur at later meetings or in work sessions.
