Nick Beatles, a retired Marine walking across the United States to raise awareness about veteran mental-health issues, was hosted by Monmouth Beach officials during the borough’s June meeting.
Mayor Sommers introduced Beatles and described his service and the purpose of the walk. Beatles told the meeting he left Phoenix on May 30 and said the walk’s goal is to draw attention to veteran suicide and mental-health struggles. He said he has received growing support along his route and reported that the commonly cited figure of 22 veteran deaths per day has risen; during his remarks he said the number is "closer to 27 a day." Beatles thanked the community and said he would continue walking south the next morning.
Officials offered Beatles a bunk at the firehouse for the night and said the borough would share photos and information about his mission on municipal social channels. Council members encouraged residents to follow him and to check on friends and neighbors, particularly veterans and first responders.
