Resident urges Ashland to install sidewalk on Liberty Street near primary school

A resident, Cindy (Cynthia) Gunter, told the Board of Aldermen the stretch of Liberty Street between Allegiance and the primary school is unsafe for pedestrians and urged the city to install a sidewalk.
"I have walked that road and almost been run off by a concrete truck more than once," Gunter said, pressing the board to address pedestrian safety. She said children and adults regularly walk to the YMCA, park, library and school and that prior efforts to secure funds stalled when a project left out money for a sidewalk. Gunter said she contacted the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), which told her the issue was not theirs and that the grant required that work be started within two years of award.
Gunter asked whether the city has staff competent to write grants on behalf of neighborhoods; she said she was a retired grant writer and recommended the city ensure grant proposals include complete funding. The mayor thanked her for coming and acknowledged the concern.
The matter prompted aldermen to note related sidewalk projects and to flag the topic for staff follow-up; public works later discussed a separate TAP-funded sidewalk project in the agenda.
