County hydrologist urges Ashland partnership on Greater Bonne Femme watershed plan

Lynn Hooper, hydrologist with Boone County Resource Management, asked the Ashland Board of Aldermen to participate in the Greater Bonne Femme Watershed Initiative, saying the effort builds on a U.S. EPA-approved watershed-based plan and expands actions across city and county lines.
"We have 6 stream segments that are impaired for bacteria," Hooper said, summarizing the technical drivers for the initiative. She asked the aldermen to approve city staff participation so the plan can be developed and potentially adopted by both cities and the county. Hooper described targeted agricultural best-management practices, habitat expansion, education and outreach, and indicated partner organizations are engaged and detailed in a report included in the meeting packet.
Hooper left printed surveys and flyers and asked for responses from the public to help guide outreach. Board members had no immediate objections and thanked Hooper for keeping to the three-minute presentation limit.
The presentation cited EPA approval of a watershed-based plan in June 2023 and recommends municipal coordination to pursue restoration and prevention measures; staff and the board will consider formal participation in follow-up work.
