The Natchitoches City Council opened its Oct. 13 meeting by recognizing Sherman Duke of the Public Works Department as the city's employee of the month. Donald Forest told the council Duke has worked in public works for about two and a half years, "he's there on time" and takes initiative identifying work around the city.
Councilwoman Smith Kirkendall read a proclamation (Resolution No. 084, 2025) declaring October National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Natchitoches. Representatives from Alpha Kappa Alpha's Robate Omega chapter spoke to thank the council. Fanny Holden identified herself as Robate Omega president; LaVora Wilson urged broader awareness, noting that "breast cancer does not only affect women, it does affect men also," and encouraged monthly self-exams and mammograms beginning at age 40 or earlier for those with a family history.
The mayor and council also highlighted upcoming community events: the farmers market (Saturdays), the 11th annual first-responders lunch sponsored by Citibank on Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Taptober (fundraiser with tastings and food trucks), and a free downtown riverbank screening of Hotel Transylvania on Oct. 30. The mayor invited residents to attend and support local schools and community partners.
