The Natchitoches City Council on Sept. 8 adopted a resolution authorizing the mayor to cover any construction-cost difference beyond a state capital outlay grant of $1.8 million for a new fire station planned on University Parkway.
Councilman Harrington introduced Resolution 77, explaining the state provided $1.8 million in capital outlay funding but the project's opinion of probable cost is approximately $2.7 million, leaving a potential funding gap. "You would have to cover the rest if there any difference," the mayor said as the council discussed the need to wait for final construction bids before committing additional city funds.
Chief Wynne described the facility as an approximately 8,400-square-foot station that should improve response times in the area. He said the project has completed soil testing and topographical surveys and is awaiting the state fire marshal's approval to proceed. Architect Brandon Cooper (identified as from Natchitoches) is the project's designer.
The council adopted the resolution by roll call. The resolution directs staff to proceed with the process required for the capital outlay grant; council members said they will review construction bids when available before finalizing funding decisions.
Attributions: Councilman Harrington presented the resolution; Chief Wynne provided project details and Mayor Ronnie Williams Jr. placed the action in financial context.
