Council designates June as Immigrant Heritage Month; offers tributes and community announcements

Council Member Terry Vo read RS 20 26-20 29, a resolution recognizing June 2026 as Immigrant Heritage Month in Nashville and Davidson County and citing the contributions of immigrants to the local economy and civic life.

The resolution text noted immigrants make up about 15% of Nashville’s population and referenced immigrant small-business ownership statistics. Council Member Vo invited a community representative identified as Shavon, who thanked the council for the invitation on behalf of the Kurdish community.

The presiding officer and several council members honored recent civic leaders who died, including Vonda McDaniel, described in the record as a longtime labor leader and past president of the Nashville Central Labor Council, and Rosetta Miller Perry, noted for founding the Tennessee Tribune and the Greater Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce. The council observed a moment of silence for Vonda McDaniel and scheduled funeral visitation and services noted in the record.

Council Member Soarer used the announcement period to call for continued activism and public events, including a John Lewis Way march on July 18 starting at the Tennessee State Library and Archives and concluding at the Ryman Auditorium; the speaker said Dr. Michael Eric Dyson will be featured.

Other announcements included an Andrew Jackson Police Youth Camp open house on July 22, and a July 11 opening for Mariposa Park at 140 Tusculum Road. Council members also reminded residents about youth soccer registration (through Aug. 7, season starts Sept. 12) and a Metro Nashville language-services survey available in 12 languages.
