Mayor DePaola said the committee, chaired by Phil Mazo, had asked for meeting support because it has struggled to keep records and maintain continuity. "They tell me she comes to every meeting," the mayor said when announcing the appointment of Cecilia Zindell to the environmental commission and speaking about committee staffing needs. The mayor asked the council to add the position to the salary ordinance so the secretary could be paid on a per-meeting basis rather than as a salaried employee.
Council members moved, seconded, and approved the change by roll call; the clerk recorded the motion as passing 6–0. The authorization caps compensation at $150 per meeting and at most 10 meetings annually. The council said the budget committee will include the line in the upcoming salary ordinance and that the decision will be reflected when the salary ordinance is prepared.
The action does not create a full-time hire and is limited to meeting coverage and minute-taking for the historic preservation committee. The governing body did not name a hire at the meeting; the appointment process and start date were not specified. The council scheduled further budget discussions at the March 18 meeting to reflect the new line in its salary ordinance.
