Emerson agrees to consider endorsing state bill to fund cancer screenings for volunteer firefighters

Mister Hermanson explained the bill, which has been proposed previously at the state level, and said it would provide coverage for cancer screening for volunteer firefighters through the state health benefits plan. "What they're asking for is our volunteer firefighters to be used as a state benefit health plan, for have $1,250 towards screening ... for the first three years," Hermanson said, describing the intent to provide screening resources to volunteers who are not part of the state plan that covers paid firefighters.
Council members expressed support for the concept and directed staff to add an item to the March 4 meeting agenda so the borough can consider a formal endorsement or resolution. Hermanson said the borough's fire chief planned to provide a written statement in support of the bill.
The council did not take a formal vote on the bill itself; the next step is an agenda item for March 4 in which councilors may adopt a resolution endorsing the measure and submit it to state representatives.
