Board votes to suspend employee and dismiss another; HR updates RIF and transfer counts

At the July 6 special session the Kanawha County Board of Education approved motions related to employee discipline and received staffing updates from HR.
Pursuant to district policy G‑25, the board voted to suspend Savannah Grace Humphreys without pay. The motion was made and seconded and passed on roll call. The board also voted to adopt the hearing examiner’s findings and terminate Laura McCormick effective immediately; that motion passed on a recorded vote.
During the questions and answers period HR staff reported on transfers and reductions in force (RIFs). For professional employees the district initially presented an estimate of 114 transfers and 37 RIFs; HR said that number is now down to zero transfers and six RIFs as placements and retirements occurred. For service employees HR said it initially listed 82 transfers and 125 RIFs; current counts show zero transfers and 26 RIFs. Staff explained the notification and hearing process, noted ongoing placement efforts, and said some positions might be restored depending on retirements and other changes. Board members asked for continued updates and noted the district’s aim to minimize job losses while balancing the budget.
The motions on discipline were voted and recorded in the meeting minutes; HR promised ongoing communication about placements and potential additional openings to be advertised.
