Orchard View Community Education reports enrollment gains, senior services and millage win

At the May 11 Committee of the Whole meeting, Orchard View Community Education leaders reported program growth and broad service activity across the district.
Brandy Carey, Orchard View Community Education Director, said the Childcare program served 202 children and families in grades K–6 this year and that preschool enrollment increased by approximately 30 three-year-old learners. Carey reported that the Innovative Learning Center has 54 confirmed graduates, is partnering with mediation services and now operates a student leadership board. She also said the program is offering a GED test for credit and noted that staff recognition included an Alternative Education Administrator Award presented to Nick Kunnen.
Carey outlined extracurricular and community services: the Orchard View travel department transported 2,418 passengers on more than 250 trips this year, and the OV Senior Center served more than 600 seniors with programs including dinner dances, foot care, tax preparation, bingo and other activities; the Senior Center is a five-day Agewell Meal site.
Superintendent Tom Hamilton and Finance Director Heather Lorenz-Babcock thanked OVCO staff and the Vote Yes committee for their work on the operating millage election, which Hamilton said passed with 64.6% yes votes. Hamilton also reviewed out-of-state travel for student groups and staff training: Destination Imagination to Kansas City (funded primarily by fundraising with a small General Fund supplement), AVID Summer Institute training (funded from RAG and Title II), and a Cardinal Elementary STEAM teacher training funded by an ISD scholarship plus Title II.
Hamilton said he would look further into plans for an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. School events announced included the Innovative Learning Center graduation on May 28 (speaker Jack Wydeck), OVHS graduation on May 31 (speaker Leslie Nelson) and a staff retirement party on June 4. Fundraising efforts yielded an estimated profit of $5,000.
The presentation provided a snapshot of student and community programming ahead of summer events and graduation ceremonies.
