Applicant proposes carved bracket sign for 1 Oakland Avenue; board asks for final measurements

The Village of Warwick Architectural and Historic District Review Board heard a proposal on July 7 for a carved, painted bracket-mounted sign to be installed on the Oakland Avenue elevation of 1 Oakland Avenue. The applicant, representing Meredith and Tom Torres, said they would hold off on a second sign along the railroad side for now and focus on the Oakland-side installation.

The applicant described the preferred placement as centered between the second-floor windows and said Kevin from Millworks supplied a mock-up. "Tom's not here, so I'm here to represent us today," the applicant said when invited to present. Board members discussed bracket style and size and described a historical look—"a little bit of flare" and a cast-iron bracket—while the applicant said she would source the bracket and provide precise measurements to the fabricator once she had them.

Sizes discussed during the exchange ranged around 24-by-36 inches up to about 36-by-36 inches; the applicant said the sign would be carved and then painted. One board member recommended a bracket with a period-appropriate flourish and another suggested a weathered, painted finish for a later, railroad-side sign if the applicant returns with that application.

The board did not record a formal vote on the sign application in the transcript, but members expressed general approval of the proposed aesthetic and placement contingent on receiving exact measurements, bracket details and a final mock-up. The applicant said she would ask "Forrest" for final measurements and send them to Kevin at Millworks; the board requested that documentation be provided on the next visit.
