Fairhaven approves bond ordinance to fund Cambridge Avenue improvements; residents press for school‑traffic fixes

The Fairhaven Borough Council voted Nov. 24 to adopt bond ordinance 2025‑20 to fund improvements on Cambridge Avenue, including new curves, sidewalks, ADA ramps, milling and paving.
Staff said the borough secured a NJDOT grant (about $202,867 referenced in council comments for a separate project) and the bond ordinance covers the gap between the grant and the engineer's estimate. On adoption, staff will award survey and base mapping work and move into a winter design phase with construction optimizations planned in early spring.
During public comment, residents near Red Bank Regional described chronic parking, speeding, double parking during pickup/drop‑off and altercations between residents and students or drivers. A resident who said they live at 251 Cambridge Avenue delivered a written summary and urged the borough to consider permanent parking restrictions, signage, electronic speed displays or traffic realignment to reduce danger. Staff said the borough will follow up with the school board administrator and police, and noted that some past openings by the regional water utility were done without borough permits; staff said they've sent a letter and will follow up.
Council closed public comment and adopted the bond ordinance by roll call; staff will solicit surveys and proceed with engineering work on the Cambridge Avenue project.
