Council rejects Synergy Sports cost‑share proposal for local sports complex

The Ashland Board of Aldermen on Sept. 10 voted to reject Resolution 2024‑55, a proposal to authorize the city administrator to enter into a letter of agreement with Synergy Sports Charlotte LLC for a cost‑shared feasibility study on a potential sports complex.
City officials said the item had been tabled at a prior meeting and that Synergy had presented a proposal for a deep‑dive study into facility size, tournament scheduling and financial modeling. The city administrator recalled that in other communities Synergy worked with municipalities that already had recreation centers to expand or revitalize.
During discussion several aldermen questioned mixing private and public funds and expressed concern about upfront city exposure. One council member said the measure would be "a lot of money" and suggested the city could conduct initial analysis internally for far less; another said the timing was wrong given other community priorities such as school matters.
Alderman (S4) moved to reject the resolution; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll‑call vote with all present voting in favor. The board recorded that Resolution 2024‑55 was rejected and will not proceed to an agreement with Synergy Sports Charlotte LLC.
