Brimfield Township trustees elect leadership, approve appointments and temporary budget

At its Jan. 6, 2025 organizational meeting, the Brimfield Township Board of Trustees elected Nicholas Coia as chair and Mike Kostensky as vice chair, approved routine appointments and a temporary 2025 budget, and designated administrative procedures including bank, legal counsel and public notice avenue.
Nicholas Coia was elected chair of the Brimfield Township Board of Trustees at the board’s Jan. 6 organizational meeting; Trustee Mike Kostensky was elected vice chair. The reorganization votes and a slate of routine administrative approvals were recorded by roll call.
The board approved liaison assignments and appointments: Coia was named Police and Fire Department liaison; Kostensky was named Road Department liaison; and Sue Fields was named Cemetery and Administration liaison. Trustees also approved a meeting with the Cemetery Board for Feb. 8, 2025.
Trustees authorized the township to use the listed legal counsel (Greg Beck; Chad Murdock; Diemert & Associates; Zashin & Rich) as needed, and retained Chase as the township’s financial institution for 2025. The board approved administrative office hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 1333 Tallmadge Road and designated the Record Courier as the township’s public notice avenue.
The trustees approved the 2025 temporary budget as submitted by Fiscal Officer John Dalziel and voted to pay trustees and the fiscal officer monthly as determined by the 2025 annual budget, in accordance with Ohio law. The board also set the IRS standard mileage reimbursement rate for 2025 at $0.70 per mile.
A series of reappointments and appointments to regional and advisory bodies were recorded. Among them, the board reappointed Michael Hlad as the township’s Portage Development Board representative and to several other regional panels, reappointed members and alternates to the zoning bodies and retained representatives to the Brimfield TIFF Board and the Central Visitors Bureau Board.
An initial motion to adopt an expanded Federal 2025 holiday-closings list (including the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve) failed. The trustees then approved a narrower list of federal holidays for recognition in 2025. The board considered two versions of the 2025 trustee meeting calendar; the first schedule failed and a revised schedule, comprising mostly Wednesday morning meetings with selected evening sessions, was later approved.
The board convened an executive session at 9:00 a.m. under Ohio Revised Code Section 121.22(G) to consider compensation of a public employee or official and returned at 9:41 a.m. The meeting adjourned at 9:42 a.m.
