Warrenton board hears Ward 1 candidates; appointment delayed to next week

The Chair also said two potential applicants, identified in the record as Cornell and Barton, retracted their interest. The Chair said the board would take no immediate vote and would consider confirmation next week after the mayor's appointment.
An applicant who addressed the board said they have lived on South Morgan Street for five years and described a career in security at McDonnell Douglas and Boeing, including a degree in business management and organizational behavior from the University of Missouri. "I think the silent majority needs a representative on this board," the applicant said, adding that they would "look at the facts" and represent community concerns, including issues tied to a local data center and abatement matters.
A second speaker, who identified themself as an Alderman for Ward 1 since about 2020, outlined his municipal experience and community involvement. He listed prior service on local committees and said his familiarity with city operations, budgeting, ordinances and long-term planning would make him suited to serve. "My years of experience on the Board of Aldermen provides ... a representative who is familiar with city operations," the Alderman said.
Board members discussed the appointment process: the Chair clarified that the mayor makes the appointment and the board's role is confirmation. Members agreed it would be appropriate to wait a week so both the board and candidates could "chew on" the remarks and for members to follow up with candidates as needed. The Chair suggested members contact prospective appointees directly before the confirmation vote.
Before adjourning, a motion to adjourn was made and seconded (the second was identified as Alden Chandler). The board voted by voice and the Chair declared the meeting adjourned. The Chair announced the next meeting will begin at 06:00.
The board did not take a formal confirmation vote on the Ward 1 vacancy at the May 19 special meeting; the mayor is expected to make the appointment, and the board intends to consider confirmation at its next meeting.
