Justin reported that the city completed a storybook walk installation at Minkley Woods and a subpanel at the sports complex in March, items intended to support community activities and events. "We planted 35 trees up at Binkley Woods," Justin said, noting 17 volunteers helped with the Arbor Day planting. He also said crews placed new flower pots on Main Street, and crews poured about 18 cubic yards of concrete to replace the batting-cage pad between Fields B and C.
The update emphasized safety and accessibility improvements at city recreation sites. Parks staff said the subpanel installation allows the concession trailer to be moved north about 200 feet to ease congestion during peak hours. Justin told the council the batting-cage structure should be up within the week and that a sidewalk project at the complex is planned, weather permitting.
Council members and residents asked practical questions about planter maintenance and accessibility. Parks staff said they salvaged topsoil from the planters before reaching the rock base and noted that some older planters lack a proper base. A council member raised concerns about wheelchair access across rock surfaces at the sports complex; staff said prior proposals for closer handicap parking exist and acknowledged the crossing is a challenge.
A member of the council suggested adding an audio option or a QR-code for the storybook walk to allow visitors to listen while walking; another member said the library should be involved since the library supplied the stories. Parks staff said they could explore a QR/audio solution with the library.
The parks report closed with timeline and next steps: the batting-cage pad has been poured and the cage is expected to be installed that week; other small projects such as sidewalk work are pending favorable weather. There was no formal council action on these items during the meeting.
