A local conservation group proposed a new recreation amenity for Montague at the Sept. 10 Township Committee meeting. Stef Niedzwiecki of the Passel Conservancy described plans for a nine-basket disc golf course (with separate tee pads for skill levels and an added putting green behind the small book library) and asked for municipal support in the form of DPW assistance and a budget commitment.
Niedzwiecki said baskets cost roughly $500 each and the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) cost estimate runs between $17,000 and $25,000, though he believes the Conservancy can lower costs by using recycled or excess materials for tee pads and relying on DPW machinery for site work. The Conservancy proposed a 50/50 split of proceeds with Montague, estimating the township’s share at about $5,500–$6,000 per year; maintenance needs were described as modest and dependent on available machinery for mowing and other upkeep.
Committee members asked for exact figures before committing funds. Mayor Zitone and others said the project looks promising but must be budgeted; Niedzwiecki was asked to submit a detailed, line-by-line budget to Municipal Clerk Dana Klinger. The Conservancy and township also discussed liability and insurance arrangements; Niedzwiecki said he has begun inquiries with insurers but the township should also review coverage because the non-profit will help maintain the course.
The Committee expressed general support but did not authorize spending at the Sept. 10 meeting; further consideration will occur during budget deliberations.
