Plain Dealing approves split of Teal Jones payment, hears public works and property-standards updates

At its April 8 meeting the Town of Plain Dealing council approved how to allocate a payment received for a Teal Jones water bill, heard updates from police and public works staff and discussed property-standards enforcement.
Allocation of Teal Jones payment: On a motion by Alderman Louis Welch, seconded by Alderman Jeff Benson, the council decided to open a separate savings account and place one half of the Teal Jones payment ($6,200) into that account. The remaining half will be placed into the water account after deducting $1,900 that must be set aside under the stipulations of the town's sewer grant. There were no public comments and the vote was unanimous among the four members present.
Public works and police reports: A public works representative told the council that repairs to Palmetto Avenue are underway with an estimated cost of $19,100 and staff requested ARPA funds to cover the work. The representative also reported that a parked backhoe was struck after someone bypassed barricades; the backhoe has since been repaired and no injuries were reported. The Chief of Police reported 280 calls in March 2025, including 147 traffic stops and 133 criminal and civil calls.
Property standards: The council discussed options for enforcing property standards and determined enforcement should proceed through mayor's court and that the town would amend the ordinance to set fines and fees; no ordinance amendment was adopted at this meeting and the item remains for further drafting.
Other business: The council noted there were no community center applications and announced the passing of former councilwoman Linda Hamiter. Alderman Jeff Benson said residents are welcome to use the cemetery pavilion for funeral services.
The meeting adjourned at 7:21 p.m. on a motion by Emily Jennings, seconded by Shavonda Gay; all members voted in favor.
