Committee on Committees recommends Sonia Harvill for Human Rights Commission, forwards multiple reappointments

The Mansfield Committee on Committees met at 9:01 a.m. July 7 and voted to recommend Sonia Harvill’s appointment to the town’s Human Rights Commission, forwarding the nomination to the Town Council for final action. Members also approved recommending reappointments to the Board of Ethics and nominations to transportation and water advisory committees.

Harvill, who was introduced to the committee as an applicant for the Human Rights Commission seat, described growing up in a family active in anti‑human‑trafficking work and said she has been involved with community programs and youth leadership. “I’ve always been surrounded by people who have been around human rights,” Harvill told the committee, recounting work her parents did in China and Thailand and describing a wellness and income‑generation program her mother ran for trafficking survivors.

Harvill said she participated in a student fellowship called Yukon Close to Home and painted a community mural titled "American Hypocrisy," which she described as a collage using protest signs to highlight perceived gaps between U.S. rhetoric and immigration policy. She said the mural has been displayed at a New Haven refugee 5K and in a Yukon gallery; she added that the Mansfield Library had considered exhibiting the work but that gallery rotation schedules complicated placement.

Committee members questioned Harvill about local priorities. Harvill identified affordable housing for immigrants and refugees as a principal concern and described prior efforts to raise funds for housing initiatives. A committee member praised her fundraising efforts during the interview; the meeting record contains inconsistent numeric references to the amount raised and does not specify a verified total.

After the interview the committee moved and seconded a recommendation to forward Harvill’s nomination to the Town Council. The committee’s action is a recommendation only; final appointment requires Town Council confirmation and is expected to be scheduled for a council agenda.

In separate action the committee reviewed and agreed to recommend reappointments to several advisory bodies. For the Board of Ethics the committee recommended that Jim Rayner, Jim Knox and Suzanne Singer Bansal be reappointed, each to terms ending June 30, 2029. The committee also recommended reappointment or nomination of Herman Gupta and Alex Bernier to the Transportation Advisory Committee with terms ending Nov. 30, 2027, and Kenneth Feathers to the Water Systems Advisory Committee for a term ending June 1, 2028. These items will be forwarded to the Town Council for formal action.

The committee had no other new or old business and adjourned the meeting.
