Plaquemine board discusses public-records policy, hydrant repair and crosswalk requests

During the Jan. 13 Plaquemine Mayor and Board of Selectmen meeting, several nonbinding discussions and staff directions addressed records access, local infrastructure repairs and pedestrian safety.
Les Ann Kirkland and Luke Avants spoke to the board about the city’s public-records request process. Selectwoman Natasha S. Johnson asked that staff develop a formal public records policy and scheduled the item for the committee meeting on Jan. 27, 2026.
Selectwoman Wanda B. Jones raised a report of a leaking water hydrant at the corner of Nadler and Foundry Streets. Utilities Director Paul Seawell, Jr. explained issues related to the hydrant and the repair process. Mayor John “JB” Barker asked Mr. Seawell to obtain an additional repair quote and to keep the board updated.
An agenda item about a leaky fire hydrant and a leaning electrical pole near the park on Turner Street was tabled at Selectwoman Jones’s request.
Selectwoman Jones also reported pedestrian-safety concerns in the Fortville area, including crossings at Canal and LA 1 and near the Catholic Church on LA 1, and asked staff to petition the state office responsible for LA 1 about possible crosswalks; Selectwoman Natasha S. Johnson requested staff make the contact.
The meeting opened with a brief appearance by Brad Daigle, a candidate for Louisiana State Representative in District 60. An item from Terri Witt with the organization We Are The Difference concerning Merry Way was tabled because Ms. Witt was not present.
These items resulted in staff directions but no formal policy adoptions or capital expenditures recorded in the minutes; the board’s formal votes that evening were on other agenda items.
