Newaygo council adopts FY2025–26 budget; millage unchanged at 17.75

The Newaygo City Council adopted the City’s fiscal 2025–26 budget on May 12 and voted to keep the city millage rate at 17.75.
City Manager Jon Schneider opened the council’s public hearing on the proposed budget and reviewed highlights from the budget book, saying the Capital Improvement Plan was included and that he had discussed the proposal with the Finance Committee in March. The council opened the hearing at 7:43 p.m. and closed it at 8:01 p.m.; the minutes record no substantive public comments during the hearing.
Council then approved Resolution 2025-15 adopting the FY2025–26 budget and Resolution 2025-16 adopting the corresponding millage levy. The roll call votes were recorded as Yeas: Black, Burns, DeVries, Fedell, Walerczyk and Walker; Engemann was absent. Mayor Ed Fedell confirmed the millage rate remained 17.75 as presented.
The budget packet includes a multi-year Capital Improvement Plan dated March 14, 2025, which council also approved during the meeting. Councilors additionally adopted a TIFA budget amendment for FY2024–25 and set a public hearing schedule for a Fire Protection Services special assessment, to be heard at the next council meeting on June 9, 2025.
The next formal step is the implementation of the approved budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year and any administrative steps required to publish the adopted levy and budget documents.
