President Koppell highlights record enrollment and new programs; AFT urges engagement ahead of elections

President Jonathan Koppell opened the Sept. 9 meeting by welcoming students back and highlighting the start of the semester, student orientations and move-in activities on the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses. He told trustees the university has a record enrollment of 24,000 students and said retention and graduation rates have improved.
Koppell also called out campus programs and initiatives, naming Montclair Unbound, Summer Pre-College Programs and the PROPEL Project — a professional development initiative for managers and administrators — and announced formation of a Montclair 250 committee to organize civic-engagement programming around the U.S. semiquincentennial.
AFT President Laura Field welcomed faculty and staff in a separate report. Field said the union is ready to work with the administration through leadership changes and restructuring and encouraged university employees and the campus community to “stay engaged in the local and gubernatorial elections in November.”
Professor Mary English, the faculty representative, summarized grant awards and interdisciplinary work in the Department of Family Science and Human Development and relayed substantial faculty feedback on proposed restructuring of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, urging the administration to consider that input before final decisions are made.
The board proceeded from these presentations to committee reports and governance actions recorded in the public minutes.
