Moonachie approves administrator sick‑day payout; council discusses cameras, paving and intersection signal

The Moonachie Borough Council on Jan. 5 approved Resolution #25-265 authorizing payment for 10 unused sick days to Administrator Anthony Ciannamea for 2024. The motion, moved by Councilmember Surak and seconded by Councilmember Cirillo, passed on a roll-call vote with five ayes and one abstention from Councilmember Haberlin.

After the vote, Mayor Dennis Vaccaro described the Borough’s Civic Center camera system, saying there are three cameras inside and three outside and that the Police Department can view the feeds. He said recordings are retained for 30 days and that the cameras use the same vendor as the school system. Councilmember Haberlin asked about camera locations and retention, and Councilmember Bauer asked whether an additional camera could face Joseph Street by the park; the mayor noted a camera already faces the basketball court and that wiring issues would need to be addressed if more cameras are added.

Mayor Vaccaro also reported that the first day Teresa Court opened saw fewer morning traffic issues but some afternoon problems; he thanked the Police Department for assistance. He outlined plans for 2026 municipal projects, including seeking bids to pave Henry Street and other roads in summer, and said the DPW Assistant Superintendent will prepare a proposal. He noted an outstanding agreement with the owner of 250 Moonachie Road is required before work on an intersection signal can proceed and that the County has indicated it would like the project completed before the World Cup. The mayor also mentioned a pump station project in Little Ferry connected to Rebuild By Design that would benefit certain areas of Moonachie.

No public comments were offered during the public hearing. The council adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
