Onekama committee schedules HWA assessment at Glen Park, holds $5,000 inventory request

The Onekama Township Parks and Recreation Committee recorded a report of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) at Glen Park and arranged an inspection on April 9 by a specialist from a regional invasive-species network.
Russel Lux reported the presence of HWA at Glen Park during the meeting; the committee noted that Emma Sznewajs, identified in committee correspondence as a Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Specialist with the Northwest Michigan Invasive Species Network, will visit and assess the site on April 9. Committee members instructed Bick to attend and advise the group on follow-up steps.
Members discussed a proposed Invasive Species Inventory and noted a $5,000 budget line for that work. Jean said she will meet with Angie to discuss invasive-species matters and other park issues and will report back at the committee’s May meeting. Because of the pending specialist assessment, the committee agreed to delay any public-facing news flash about Glen until after Sznewajs’s visit.
The committee’s action was procedural: it documented the specialist visit date and postponed further public communication and next steps pending the assessment findings. The committee plans to reconvene discussion of the inventory, HWA response and any required treatment recommendations after receiving the assessment results.
