Council tables repeal of cat TNR ordinance, readies ordinances to comply with NJDEP tree and stormwater rules

At the Aug. 6 work session the Borough of Mountainside tabled discussion of repealing its cat trap‑neuter‑return (TNR) ordinance and directed the Health Officer to consult with a property owner about an ongoing feral‑cat problem on Timberline Road.
Council members noted the property owner has an inability to trap a feral male cat and that eight licensed cats already live at the property; Council President Pacifico offered to assist in implementing a plan. Because the repeal was not approved, council left the matter open for further discussion after the Health Officer reports back.
Separately, administration briefed council members on new New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) mandates concerning tree removal and replacement, and updated stormwater regulations. Borough staff will draft and introduce ordinances at the next meeting to bring local code into compliance with the NJDEP requirements.
Council did not take final action on either item at the work session; both are scheduled for ordinance introduction or further action at a future meeting.
