Mountainside Borough Council approves paving contract, field lighting and police vehicle in unanimous session

At its Sept. 17 meeting the Mountainside Borough Council awarded a $197,189.04 paving contract for Bayberry Lane, approved a field-lighting replacement not to exceed $77,990, authorized purchase of a 2024 Dodge Durango pursuit vehicle for $41,654, and approved grants, refunds and appointments in unanimous votes.
The Borough Council of Mountainside convened Sept. 17 and approved a package of contracts, budget adjustments, donations and personnel appointments affecting local roads, recreation facilities and public safety.
The council voted to award Contract 2024-4 for paving improvements on Bayberry Lane to Denbar Construction Inc. of Kenilworth for a total of $197,189.04, covering the base bid plus Alternates #1, #2 and #3, following the Borough Engineer’s recommendation. The motion introducing Resolution 113-2024 was made by Councilman Rinaldo and seconded by Councilwoman Pacifico; the roll call vote was unanimous.
Council members also approved Resolution 120-2024 awarding a field-lighting replacement contract to Musco Sports Lighting, LLC under Sourcewell Co-Op #041123-MSL in an amount not to exceed $77,990, to replace a storm-damaged pole at Deerfield. The resolution was introduced by Councilman Rinaldo and seconded by Councilman Van Deusen; the Chief Financial Officer certified available funds.
For public safety equipment, the council approved Resolution 118-2024 to purchase a 2024 Dodge Durango Pursuit AWD from Nielsen of Morristown (state contract #23-FLEET-34933) for $41,654.00; Resolution 118-2024 was introduced by Councilwoman Pacifico and seconded by Councilman Rinaldo.
Financial housekeeping included Resolution 112-2024, authorizing refunds for duplicate tax payments (two properties totaling the amounts listed in the resolution), Resolution 116-2024 inserting a $4,323 Watts Mountainside Community Foundation grant into the 2024 budget, Resolution 117-2024 cancelling a $439.63 Municipal Alliance receivable, and approval of bills and claims totaling $117,305.19. The council also approved a $500 donation to the Mountainside PTO for its Fall Festival (Resolution 115-2024) and appointed substitute electrical and plumbing inspectors (Resolution 119-2024).
All listed resolutions passed by roll call with ayes from Councilmembers Dierkes, Matejek, Pacifico, Rinaldo, Van Deusen and Wass and no nays. Several items were introduced by named council members and carried by unanimous votes; where motions and seconds were recorded in the minutes, they are noted above.
The meeting included routine council comments—announcements about senior events, a reminder to drive carefully with children back in school, and praise for new soccer goals and field-lining equipment—and two public commenters. Resident Mary Lou La Scala asked about the repaving schedule for Outlook Drive; the council said a portion is scheduled for next year through an NJDOT grant. Resident Domenico DeLuca announced National Heart Prevention Day and a Fire Department Open House.
