Mount Arlington board adopts tentative $16.49 million 2026-27 budget; sets April 29 public hearing

The Mount Arlington Board of Education voted on March 19 to adopt a tentative 2026-2027 budget totaling $16,492,360 and set a public hearing on the proposal for April 29, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. at Mount Arlington Public School.
Interim Superintendent Thomas Ficarra introduced the budget to the board and the public. The district listed $16,077,621 for the general fund, $182,339 in special revenues and $232,400 in debt-service revenue. The administration reported an anticipated revenues offset of $975,000 and a proposed tax levy of $13,549,048 to be raised for 2026-2027. The Secretary to the Board, Robin C. Tedesco, was authorized to submit the tentative budget to the Executive County Superintendent in accordance with N.J.S.A.18A:7F-5 and 18A:7F-6.
As part of the tentative budget adoption the board established maximum spending levels for professional services and travel. The budget lists appropriations for legal ($25,000), auditing ($36,500), related services ($265,275) and other professional services ($9,000); the board set a 120% ceiling on the listed amounts for professional services and approved a maximum district travel expenditure of $15,410 for the 2026-27 school year, to be tracked by the School Business Administrator per N.J.A.C. 6A:23A Subchapter 7.
The motion to approve Finance Agenda Items B-1 through B-13 (which included the tentative budget) carried on roll call with four affirmative votes from members present: Rachel Byrne, Chris D'Amico, Melissa Eckert and Sheila Studint; three members were absent. The board also approved routine finance items that were part of the motion, including a February general account payments register totaling $1,183,558.82 and line-item transfers for February.
The district will hold the public hearing on the tentative budget on April 29; members of the public may review the proposed budget materials as posted on the district website. The board's adoption of a tentative budget begins the statutorily required review process with the county office before a final budget is adopted later in the spring.
