At its April 22 meeting the Mountainside Borough Council read and approved several community proclamations and recognized local groups and first responders.
The council proclaimed Arbor Day and noted the Department of Public Works will plant two trees on April 25. It also proclaimed May 2025 as Building Safety Month and cited the International Code Council’s role in model codes and fire prevention. The council joined neighboring mayors in proclaiming May 2025 Mental Health Awareness Month and announced plans to display green ribbons downtown in support of the Crosstown Mental Health Coalition.
Mayor Paul N. Mirabelli read a memorial proclamation honoring Dr. Marilyn McGuire Hart, who died March 26 at age 99. The proclamation recounted Hart’s civic service, academic career and role as the first woman elected to the Mountainside Borough Council; family members joined councilmembers for a photo and to accept the proclamation.
Community grants were presented by representatives of the Elks Foundation: a check to the Mountainside PAL to support Memorial Day events and a check to the Mountainside VFW to support veterans programs. Jeanne Ruben, president of the PAL, said, "Just a big thank you," after accepting the gift.
The meeting closed with a police awards ceremony recognizing multiple life-saving responses in 2024. The department cited an incident on May 21, 2024, in which officers forced entry to a residence and removed an unconscious person from a running vehicle; the victim was stabilized and transported to a hospital. Officers were also honored for naloxone administration and for using a LifeVac suction device at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living to clear a choking resident. The department presented life-saving awards and years-of-service recognitions for several officers.
