Mountainside council approves generator funding, awards contract and adopts routine resolutions

The Mountainside mayor and borough council on Dec. 17 adopted a series of routine but consequential actions, including a capital appropriation for a generator, an award of a purchase-and-installation contract and multiple budget and refund measures.
On a unanimous roll call, the council adopted ordinance 1336-2024 to appropriate $75,000 from the capital improvement fund for the installation of a borough generator, with language allowing up to $75,000 in additional funds if needed and reimbursement from alternate funding sources should they become available. The public hearing drew no comments and the ordinance passed after the council closed the public session.
The council also approved resolution 145-2024 to award a contract for purchase and installation of the municipal generator to Air Group LLC of Whippany, New Jersey, on the recommendation of electrical engineer Fred Chen. The contract award was limited to an amount not to exceed $499,000 and passed on a unanimous roll call.
Council members next approved several fiscal housekeeping items: resolution 141-2024 moved $15,000 across departmental appropriations (including allocations from the tax assessor and planning board into public works and health), resolution 142-2024 authorized refunds totaling $11,654.96 for duplicate tax payments to several property owners, and resolution 140-2024 canceled tax and sewer account discrepancies of $5 or less for 2024. Renee presented bills and claims of $397,369.18, which the council approved pending availability of funds.
The council also held the second reading and adopted ordinance 1335-2024, which adjusts salary ranges for municipal positions across a range of titles from borough administrator to assistant tax collector and chief of police. The public hearing for that ordinance was opened and closed with no public comment prior to the vote.
For community fundraising and events, the council approved raffle applications for Our Lady of Lourdes Church (off-premise 50/50) and the Mountainside PTO (on-premise 50/50).
Vote at a glance (roll-call): Councilmen and councilwomen present — Dierkes, Matijak, Pacifico, Reynaldo, Van Dusen and Wasp — voted unanimously in favor of the listed ordinances and resolutions.
The meeting included routine announcements, including a $218,674 New Jersey Department of Transportation grant to repave Outlook Drive West and a reminder of a menorah lighting scheduled for Dec. 29 at Earl Hall. The meeting adjourned and the council and public proceeded to a scheduled tree-lighting program.
