At its May 11 meeting the Mountain Lakes Board of Education received a progress report on four district goals and moved a wide consent agenda of business items while tabling one finance item for further review.
Superintendent Dr. Siegel and administrative presenters summarized work on district goals that included active-learning classroom strategies, literacy-focused professional development, STEM nights featuring Ozobots and drone-building, and social-emotional learning planning using Panorama Education data. The presenters said the district will follow up with separate presentations on specific goals in June.
"Anything with the herd on it has to be included in a photo," one presenter said, using slides and photos to highlight classroom projects and STEM activities; administrators described job-embedded professional development and teacher walk-throughs to encourage small-group instruction and student problem-solving.
On the business agenda, the board approved a large set of routine finance and personnel motions by roll call that included minutes approvals, tuition schedules, professional services contracts, technology and software adoptions, transportation and summer compensations. The business administrator noted the agenda mostly reflected forward-looking items for the 2026-27 school year.
A separate motion to table agenda item 25, which addresses food-service pricing, was approved so that the finance committee could review pricing details before the board votes. The board also removed agenda item 33 from consideration that evening and said it would be addressed later.
Board members raised one cybersecurity question during the meeting after national reports about a Canvas user-data incident. Administrators said the district IT director had removed a suspicious email and was working to confirm whether any student or staff data had been compromised; the administration provided high-level assurances there was no confirmed exposure.
Next steps: the finance committee will examine food-service pricing and return recommendations to the board. Administrators said additional goal-specific presentations are scheduled for June and that approved personnel appointments and summer assignments will proceed as authorized.
