Memorial Villages Police Department budget approved; council notes fraud investigations and recruitment needs

Chief Schultz presented the Memorial Villages Police Department’s April activity report and the FY2027 budget request during the May 19 meeting. The department reported 1,943 calls for service in April, 777 house watches, several traffic enforcement actions, and two arrests in a postal mail intercept/fraud investigation involving washed checks. The department also reported a resident scam loss of $170,000; MVPD is producing an educational video with the victim to raise community awareness.
Chief Schultz told the council the FY2027 budget totals $10,362,471, with personnel requested at $8,644,345 (a 16.9% increase intended to maintain regional pay parity), operations at $1,463,126 and capital at $255,000. The assessment for each of the three member cities was reported as $3,454,157, an increase of $394,391 per city. Councilmember Carl Moerer moved to approve the FY2027 MVPD budget and Councilmember Hunter Cameron seconded the motion; it carried 5-0.
The department said it is recruiting to fill one vacant position and that the Police Commission approved Phase II of an eight-step compensation plan intended to improve regional competitiveness.
The council approved the budget; no amendments were offered at the meeting.
