Council asks DOTD for funds to implement parts of airport master plan

The Natchitoches City Council on Sept. 20 adopted a resolution asking the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Division of Aviation to provide state funds for projects identified in the Natchitoches Regional Airport master plan.
Councilwoman Smith Kirkendall read the resolution and authorized the mayor to sign documents required by the FAA and DOTD. City staff outlined near-term priorities including hangar door replacement for a city-owned hangar used by a lessee, a taxi-lane engineering study related to potential new T-hangars, and improvements to Wallenberg Road that leads into the airport.
"The 1st year ... is hanger door replacement on the hanger on the Northeast corner of the airport," the purchasing director said, noting that hangar doors are the top priority and that staff expect to pursue grant assistance.
Council members asked about an automated weather observation system (AWOS) and the timeline for a downtown bridge replacement; staff said AWOS is on the list but may be a state-only project and that bridge construction design is roughly 90% complete with construction potentially starting in 2027.
The resolution passed on a unanimous roll call.
The action authorizes the mayor to pursue state funds and to sign required documentation; it does not itself appropriate funds for construction.
