Board reviews Student Safety Data System report: three affirmed HIB incidents in reporting period

At its Feb. 20 meeting the Board received the Student Safety Data System report for Reporting Period 1 (Sept. 1–Dec. 31, 2024). Assistant Superintendent Joseph Uglialoro summarized incident counts and the district’s response.

Uglialoro reported three affirmed HIB (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying) incidents across district schools, zero weapons incidents, two incidents of fighting (classified as violence), one incident of vandalism/property damage, and three confirmed substance-use incidents. Breakdown by school: New Providence High School had three HIB investigations with one affirmed; New Providence Middle School had three investigations, none affirmed; Allen W. Roberts Elementary had four investigations with two affirmed; Salt Brook Elementary had two investigations, none affirmed.

Uglialoro said all HIB investigations were completed within the ten-day statutory requirement. He named the investigators for each school (High School: Mr. Criscitello; Middle School: Mrs. Wittenberg; Salt Brook: Mrs. Kwiatkowski; Allen W. Roberts: Mrs. Feliciano-Allen) and described disciplinary responses (in-school and out-of-school suspension, parent/teacher conferences and individual counseling). The district also reported training activities, including staff training through Strauss Esmay and curricular/instructional activities on cyberbullying, character education and social-emotional learning.

The Board declared the public hearing on the Student Safety Data System open and closed; there were no public comments during that hearing.

What happens next: the district will continue to track incidents per state reporting requirements and maintain training and response protocols.
