Board approves $5.3 million in bills, student placements and school resource officers

The New Providence Board of Education on Aug. 26 approved finance, contract and personnel items that include a $5,304,440.76 August bill list, several intergovernmental and vendor agreements, and costly special-education tuition placements.
Finance Chair Amanda Marano moved approval of finance items including acceptance of the Board Secretary and Treasurer reports and payment of the August bill list totaling $5,304,440.76. The board also approved the Pomptonian food-service price recommendations for 2024–25, and an agreement with the Morris-Union Jointure Commission for vehicle and bus fleet maintenance. "After review, we hereby accept the Board Secretary and Treasurer reports for July 2024," the board recorded as part of the motion.
The board approved the sale of a student's Phonak Roger DM system to Union County Vocational Technical School for an amount not to exceed $1,766.25 because the student will attend UCVTS.
Under education items the board approved the enrollment of Student #19134 at Academy 360 for 2024–25 at a tuition cost of $121,744.41, effective Sept. 5, 2024, and approved Springfield School District student #13382 as an 8th-grade tuition student at New Providence Middle School for $25,741.00, effective Aug. 29, 2024. The board also approved Brightside Family Services to provide counseling services for Spanish-speaking ELL students at $160.00 per hour.
The board approved three School Resource Officers for the 2024–25 school year who are employed by the Borough of New Providence (Dennis Carovillano at NPHS/MS, Robert Moran at Allen W. Roberts School, and Eduar Cruz at Salt Brook School) with partial funding by the Board of Education.
Policy actions included first readings of several equity-related policies and a second-reading adoption of Policy 2626 on Artificial Intelligence.
Votes on major blocks of items were taken by roll call and recorded as yeas from all present board members with one absence (Mrs. Gunderman).
