Students honored for national STEM awards; board hears Italy trip and college-visit presentations
Summary
Board members recognized students who placed in national TSA competitions, heard presentations on an Italy student trip and summer college visits, and learned that new state law will require the class of 2025 and 2026 to complete the FAFSA to graduate (waiver available).
The board recognized student accomplishments and reviewed travel and college-counseling activities at its Sept. 26 meeting.
Amanda Marano presented Certificates of Excellence to Technology Student Association competitors who won national recognitions. Students named in the minutes included Matteo Agastra, Sean Kruger, Rohan Kulkarni, Brandon Maneely and Cleo Rossmann (TSA Gold Achievement Award); Elizabeth Bigham, Eden Kim and Cleo Rossmann (4th place Audio Podcasting); and Sebastian Mercado and Trevor Fornuff (9th place Virtual Reality Visualization). The minutes note several projects including an AI-assisted software app and a virtual-reality educational visualization.
Administrators then presented a linked slide deck and photos from an Italy trip. Mr. Santoro and Mrs. Florencio described visits to Capri, Pompeii, Naples and Vatican City and highlighted immersive activities, including a pizza-making lesson at a site with an archaeological dig. Senior students Isabella DeLuca and Danielle Formichella shared their experiences. Presenters described eligibility criteria (AP art courses and world-language level 3) and said the district is considering expanding qualifications for future trips.
Ms. Shadis summarized a summer college-visit program that included 12 colleges across four states and highlighted admission practices at several institutions. She also noted a new New Jersey law requiring graduates in the classes of 2025 and 2026 to complete the FAFSA to earn diplomas; a waiver is available for families who decline to complete the form.
Board members thanked presenters and encouraged continued support for student programs.
