Board approves $5.33 million in bills, personnel actions and policy readings

The New Providence Board of Education approved routine finance, personnel, facilities and policy items during its Feb. 20 business meeting, with roll-call votes recorded on multiple motions.
Finance: Finance Chair Joseph Walsh moved to accept the Board Secretary and Treasurer reports for January 2025 and to approve the payment of bills for February 2025 totaling $5,328,971.29. The Board also approved the state-certified costs-per-pupil figures for the 2023–24 school year (Preschool/Kindergarten $15,245; Grades 1–5 $16,915; Grades 6–8 $16,203; Grades 9–12 $18,095; and special-education categories listed in the minutes). The Board approved reissued checks, a $50 donation from The Blackbaud Giving Fund for a Salt Brook playground, and a Pravco deduct change order not to exceed $14,743.65. All votes on the finance package carried by roll call with seven members recorded as "Yea."
Facilities: The Board approved disposal of outdated technology and musical equipment as moved by Facilities Chair Mr. Walsh.
Education and personnel: The Board approved Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying recommendations under the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act for specified incident report numbers across schools; approved revised/new calendars for 2025–26 and 2026–27; and authorized submission of a SEMI waiver for 2025–26 based on an estimated fewer-than-40 Medicaid-eligible special-education students. Personnel actions approved included multiple long-term substitute and appointment recommendations, coaching assistant stipends, a playground/lunch assistant resignation, and authorized unpaid leaves including a five-day unpaid paternity leave for Assistant Principal Michael Criscitello (dates subject to change based on actual birth).
Policy: The Board approved Policy 9163 (Spectator Code of Conduct) on first reading and several policies and one regulation on second reading, including Policy 2260 (Equity in School and Classroom Practices) and Policy 2411 (Guidance Counseling).
Votes and outcome: Where roll-call tallies were recorded, votes were unanimous in favor by the seven members present (Mrs. Castellano; Mrs. Cuccaro; Dr. Empson Hayden; Ms. Gunderman; Mrs. Marano; Mr. Walsh; Mrs. Zane). No items were tabled or defeated at the meeting.
What happens next: Approved personnel and contract items will be implemented per district timelines; the board will continue to finalize budget planning pending state aid figures.
