Trey Hargett was reelected Tennessee Secretary of State in a joint convention of the General Assembly on Jan. 15, 2025, and was sworn into office.
Representative Martin of Hamilton nominated Trey Hargett for another term; Senator Pote seconded. Senator Oliver nominated Tequila Johnson, describing her as CEO of the Equity Alliance; Representative Clemens seconded that nomination. After nominations were closed, the clerk read roll-call results: the Senate was reported as 27 for Hargett and 6 for Johnson; the House was reported as 74 for Hargett and 21 for Johnson. The presiding officer declared Trey Hargett duly, legally and constitutionally elected Secretary of State for a four-year term.
Judge Neil McBrayer administered the oath. In his remarks Hargett said he intended to lay out a multiyear plan for the office: “I’m gonna take the next 30 minutes to talk about our big plans for the next 4 years.” He thanked family and colleagues and said he does not take the trust given lightly.
Following the oaths the presiding officer noted a reception invitation from the constitutional officers; the joint convention was then dissolved.
